Ant on Peony

This picture is still one of my “top” ant pictures- I just love how whenever you find peonies, you know you can find LOTS of ants!

This peony bush blooms gorgeous every year in my front yard, but it’s gorgeous blossoms I leave outside on the bush instead of cutting them for arrangements. I don’t think I have ever managed to bring cut peonies into the house without bringing in quite a few of their little ant buddies. Although I do not care much for ants in my kitchen, I still find them just the coolest little creatures to observe.

Katydid Photo

Simply gorgeous coloring and texture are two of my favorite reasons to photograph katydids. Although I’m not sure if this one was in poor health or just laying eggs- I normally don’t see them on the ground in the grass. Actually I nearly rolled over on this little one until I noticed two little eyes looking straight at me while I was lounging in the grass on this pleasant late summer day. By having such a large yard rich with foliage I attract SO many different types of bugs which is just the best thing in the world to me. (Although I did get stung by a wasp? last week) Either way, I enjoy the occasional katydid sighting just as much as I enjoy their unique mating songs.

Baby Cobweb Spiders

Being a photographer is IN my blood. I can’t help it. I photograph everything. In fact it kinda freaks out some people (even my friends) at times. A perfect example is the fact that I started this particular blog. Bugs fascinate me, and most people don’t take the time to really even take a second look at them. In fact- most people would otherwise squash, smush, or smash bugs without second thought. Bugs are living creatures too, and people tend to be scared of what they don’t understand. Now, i’m not going to pretend to be any “bug expert” but I truly hope that once you’ve taken a closer look at the beauty and wonder of some of these bugs- you’ll at least walk away with some new found appreciation.

This photo was taken in my basement. Now, I know most people would have headed for the shop vac if they discovered a batch of hatchlings in their basement…. but that’s not me. These are “cobweb” spiders. They don’t typically ever bother people, and they tend to build webs in corners and just kinda hang around. Commonly though they are mistaken for “daddy long legs.” This picture shows the parent (mom?) with her new babies before they have had a chance to venture off on their own.
